Kids Rugby Age Groups London | Classes for Ages 2-7
Rugby Classes for 2-3 Year Olds London | Toddler Rugby
Our Rugby Munchkins classes for toddlers are the perfect introduction to kids rugby classes, helping young children build confidence, coordination and a love for sport from an early age.
In these fun, engaging sessions, children learn the fundamentals of rugby including how to hold the ball correctly, while developing key physical skills such as balance, agility and coordination.
We place a strong focus on teamwork and social development, encouraging children to interact, share and build friendships through a variety of fun, structured team games. Using colourful rugby balls and safe equipment, we create an environment that supports both learning and enjoyment.
Children will take part in exciting, age-appropriate activities such as:
🏉 Scoring tries
🎯 Kicking over the posts
💥 Using soft tackle bags
To support confidence and engagement, parent participation is encouraged, making this a great bonding experience as well as an introduction to kids sports classes.
Rugby Classes for 3-4 Year Olds London | Pre-School Rugby
Our Rugby Munchkins classes for ages 3–4 build on the foundations introduced in earlier sessions, helping children progress further in their kids rugby classes journey through fun, structured and engaging activities.
At this stage, we begin to introduce more rugby-specific skills and drills, including:
🏃 Side-stepping and movement skills
🏉 Non-contact touch rugby
⏱️ Timed team games to encourage friendly competition
Children continue to develop important physical skills such as hand-eye coordination, balance and agility, while also improving confidence, teamwork and listening skills.
Using colour-coded mini rugby balls, we support coordination and learning in a fun, visual way—while helping children feel more independent and “grown up” in their sessions.
While parent participation is still welcomed, children are encouraged to take more ownership of their activities, supporting their confidence and social development in a safe and supportive environment.
Rugby Classes for 4-7 Year Olds London | Mini Rugby Skills
Our Rugby Munchkins classes for ages 4–7 are designed to prepare children for the next stage of their rugby journey, including progression into mini rugby and junior rugby coaching.
At this level, we focus on refining and developing core rugby skills, while introducing more advanced techniques through fun, structured sessions. Every activity is designed with a rugby-specific purpose, helping children improve while still enjoying every moment.
Children will build on their existing skills and learn:
🏃 Advanced movement and game awareness
🏉 Tag rugby (non-contact) to develop spatial awareness and decision-making
🗣️ Communication and teamwork in game situations
🎯 Positioning, passing and attacking play
Our sessions help children understand how to find space, work as a team and make decisions, all of which are essential for progressing into kids rugby teams and local clubs.
While the focus remains on fun and enjoyment, this stage introduces a more structured approach to kids rugby training, helping children grow in confidence, ability and independence.
Parents are always welcome to watch and support, but by this stage many children are confident participating independently so feel free to enjoy a well-earned break!
The youngest Rugby Munchkins class introduces the children to the most basic skills like holding the ball in two hands, and developing balance, co-ordination and agility. Teamwork and social skills are two of life’s key skills so we try to emphasise and practice this as much as possible through lots of fun team games using coloured rugby balls to promote safety and learning. We also offer fun pod like games such as scoring tries, kicking over the posts and using the tackle bags! We encourage parent participation for this age group.
The next stage in the Rugby Munchkins journey picks up from what they have already learnt and starts to concentrate on more rugby specific drills; side-stepping, touch rugby, and timed team events introducing healthy competition and fun. The children will predominantly be using colour coded mini rugby balls, so still developing hand-eye / colour co-ordination whilst starting to feel a bit more grown up. Parent participation at this level is encouraged, but by no means expected.
The Munchkins are now close to making the big step up to mini-rugby and with this in mind, we look to develop their core skills even further. All the games we play are great fun but all have specific rugby relevant themes. As some clubs now allow children of this age to play mini-rugby, we look to finesse their skills, but also add some new skill sets in to their class which they wouldn’t be getting elsewhere. We do at this level introduce tag rugby which is purely non-contact but excellent for them to identify space and opportunities as well as hone their communication skills. Parents are always welcome to interact but by now they can take their well-earned break with a coffee and the newspaper!

Rugby Classes FAQs | Kids Rugby Questions Answered
We understand that it is important you choose the right sports class for your child, so we have provided answers to some of the most frequently asked questions parents have when booking with Munchkin Sports. If the answer to your question is not provided below, please contact our Admin Team on admin@munchkinsports.com or on 020 8658 3777, as they are happy to help.
Our Rugby Munchkins classes are split into three age groups: 2-3 year olds, 3-4 year olds and 4-7 year olds. Please note that classes based at rugby clubs operate the last class for 4-5 year olds only as once children reach Year 1 they are able to transition over to the rugby club's own minis section.
The first two classes are 45 minutes long and the last class is an hour long.
You will need to stay with your child throughout the session. With younger children we actively encourage parents help their children during the session whilst with the older children we encourage the children to build their independence and hence parents take on more of a supportive role from the sidelines.
During the winter months classes will be held in the sports hall and during the summer classes will be held on the outdoor netball courts. There may be occassions where the sports hall is out of action due to school exams; on these occassions we will be outside on the netball courts and an email will be sent to parents ahead of time reminding them of the change and the need to wear warm clothes.
We offer a paid trial session option so that you can try a class before committing to the term. You are under no obligation to sign up for the full term after this trial. After your trial you will be able to discuss the trial with the Head Coach. We hope your child will really enjoy their trial and will be very excited to come back the following week. If however they didn't settle well, the Head Coach may recommend they have another trial in the older or younger class or if you feel that your child is not yet ready to join the classes, you are welcome to come back when they are ready and book another trial session.

Age groupings are a guideline. Please discuss your child's progress with the Head Coach who will advise if they are ready to move to the next class.
We welcome spectators at all our weekend classes, however we would ask parents to ensure that siblings remain on the sidelines and do not participate in the activities or play with the equipment. We ask that if you are photographing your child during the class, that you ensure no other children are present in the photos.
Weekend classes run term time and will not run through the school holidays.
We welcome boys and girls at all of our weekend classes. Our classes are inclusive regardless of gender all ability.
Spaces at our weekend classes are allocated for the term (5-7 week blocks depending on school term dates) and parents are asked to commit for the full term regardless of attendance.
Payments can be made via credit/debit card.
If you are unable to make a class please notify the Admin Team who will report your absence to the Head Coach. Regretfully we cannot offer refunds, credits or catchup classes for non-attendance.
When you first sign up for our weekend classes you will need to pay a one-off joining fee of £37. This joining fee covers your sports insurance with us and as a welcome gift you will also receive a Munchkin Sports rucksack; Munchkin Sports shirt and sports shorts; Munchkin Sports water bottle and Munchkin Sports reward chart
The joining fee is a one-off payment per child. This is transferrable across the sports and if you decide to take a break from our classes this does not need to be paid again when you rejoin.
Subject to class availability it may be possible to transfer your child to a different sport. Please contact the Admin Team to discus this.
Age groupings are a guideline. We recommend that you initially book a trial in your child's appropriate age and discuss with the Head Coach at the end of the session. If your child has additional needs or if you feel like they may struggle in their age group, please contact the Admin Team ahead of booking.
Subject to availability you can join a class part way through a term. Term fees will be prorated. For the following term you will be asked to commit to the full term.
We don't offer refunds however if you are wishing to cancel a booking that is within our notice period we will happily cancel booking and place credit on account for future booking.
At the end of each term we will automatically reserve your child a space in the next term. Please ensure that you follow the link in your re-enrollment email to make payment to secure your place. We do not hold any payment details on file. If you do not wish to continue your classes please contact the Admin Team who will remove your booking.
